The reason for this is Mac's can't natively write to NTFS drives, only read, so instead of having to pay and/or upgrade third party software, you can just use a native format both computers can read easily. If your using the drive between Windows and Mac's, then format it exFAT (for 4GB+ sized files, less compatibility) or FAT32 (best compatibility) between the two types of operating systems, and format it on the Windows machine, not on the Mac.
